Hello everyone,

A few days ago I went to check out the LHBS near the place I am living for college and I got a recipe and ingredients for a one gallon BIAB. I would like to hear what your thoughts on this recipe are. The shop owner had never brewed in a bag before so he wasn't really sure about the results. Here is the recipe:

Blonde

2 lbs Pale 2 row
.5 lbs Crystal 10
.5 lbs Pils

.25 oz willamette @ 60
.25 oz "            "  @ 10

muntons (?) ale yeast (he has bad handwriting :/ )

1) 1.5 gal water to 150, steep grains for 60 min

2) Boil

3) Cool and add to primary

4) Pitch

5) ~ 2 week ferm at room temp

6) bottle with 1 teaspoon table sugar per 16 oz bottle

7) carb for 2 weeks

This will be my first BIAB so any pointers would be great!

Thanks!

This seems like a reasonable recipe. I suspect this will have an OG close to 1.070 @ 66% efficiency, so it's on past the high end of the range for the Blonde style (BJCP 6B, OG: 1.038-1.054). My recommendations are: (1) top off to 1 gallon if needed, (2) shake the heck of the carboy to aerate the wort, (3) rehydrate the yeast before pitching, (4) ferment at lower than room temp (64-65°F) and move the carboy to room temp for 2-3 days when fermentation is just about stopped, and (5) ignore the table sugar recommendation, and use the priming sugar calculator on this website. Carb for *three* weeks at 70°F.

BYO: American Blonde Ale

Let me preface this by saying I rarely brew a blonde ale, but, this article suggests that no more than 10% Crystal be added. With that grain bill the crystal is 16%.

It's maybe a smidge high on the crystal, but it's just C10 - I think you'll be fine.

Thanks for the replies!

@chino_brews I should be able to manage all of that. I am sitting at about 62 degrees in a room next to mine, so I will let it ferment in there.

I will hopefully be brewing this weekend! I can't wait to see how this comes out!

@vinpaysdoc After reading that article I would have liked maybe a slightly different recipe, but everything is crushed and mixed. I will have to do some tweaking for next time.

@homebrewdad I am loving the community on here so far! Keep up the good work!

Lots of great advice from everyone else. Is this your first brew?

This will be my second brew, first all grain. Although my first brew was two cans of mystery stuff that you could boil if you wanted to. So this will be my real first brew, hoping the BIAB wont bite me!

You'll be fine.  You are doing your homework, which puts you ahead of tons of new brewers.  Be sure to let us know how it goes!
