So, I posted this little entry today... and promptly stirred up a hornet's nest.

I guess that I should have expected it.  I'm just surprised by the extent of the emotions is all.

I'm re-reading through the comments on reddit, and I have to say this was a really good topic with really good discussions.. I'm impressed with how civilized and thought-provoking the conversations were.. for instance /r/gaming has lost its mind with the discussion of sexism, with different circumstances but pretty much the same topic..

Heh.  Reddit wasn't bad.  I only had one guy curse me publicly.  Though you should see my inbox.  Or rather, you shouldn't see it.

Of course, at HBT, I became a laughing stock.  Check out this gem.

Sticks and stones, and all of that.  I do find it surprising just how many people I offended by my urging for us as a community to maybe not be so offensive.  :)

Take it in positive light. You were spot on.

We don't like it when our bad habits are exposed... and treating women (or others) differently is a bad idea. I attended a big homebrew competition/seminar last year and was appalled. Of about 250 attendees, maybe 15 were women. With the exception of 2 minorities, the rest were middle aged to retired fat white men, drunk, whistling at the ladies who dressed up like beer wenches and delivered raffle winnings. I would no more take my wife to one of these than I would take her to a strip club. For the record, the men were asses to each other as well.

I really have no comment on the women that did attend (they seemed to enjoy the attention), other than the wife of a friend who quietly got up and left as soon as the raffles started. I talked with her later - and she was disappointed that her husband remained in the room. She remains supportive of his hobby, and I am proud that the little get togethers with our club and friends are much more open and supportive. I am hoping that I see a much more diverse and respectful crowd at NHC.

Thanks for the feedback, mchrispen.  I'm not pretending to represent women everyone (or women, period).  I'm not suggesting that every homebrewing man is a misogynist (or, for that matter, even that most of us are).  But to pretend that it's not there is silly, and to get angry about my post seems fishy.

There is very much of a "boys' club" feel to a lot of homebrewing, and I think that we just don't need that.

Okay, I'll hush, and go back to people suggesting that I'm the real misogynist, what with my screen name that specifies a gender.
