I recently found out that for a 5 gallon batch of beer you only need to use half of the whirlfloc tablet for last the 5 minutes of the boil.  This was news to me, but I saw someone post it somewhere and checked on midwest supplies and confirmed what they said.

Whirlfloc Tablets at Midwest Supplies - www.midwestsupplies.com/whirlfloc-tab...

Hope this helps!

That's weird.  It says that on my package of whirfloc, but I bought mine at Rebel Brewer, so maybe they just add that to the label and other places don't?

I think mine said to use 1 tablet for the last ten minutes of the boil.

Not that I really care too much... gelatin is where it's at for clarity.

I get mine from Northern Brewer and if you look on the little jar and in the text on this web page (www.northernbrewer.com/shop/whirlfloc...) they are kind of vague, but probably because it doesn't hurt to use a full tablet for 5 gallons.  But for my last 5 gallon batch I cut a tablet in half and added with 5 mins left in the boil.

I always thought you should do 1 whole tablet with 15 mins left, but like I said that seemed to work fine too it just sounds like it doesn't work any better by using a whole tablet vs half tablet for a 5 gallon batch.

People have called Kerry International and verified this. Whirlfloc is designed to be used at a rate of 5 g per hL, which translates into about 1 tablet of Whirfloc-T for roughly 10 gallons considering the amount of active ingredient in the tablet. (Whirfloc also comes in granular form, which the pro brewers use and is less refined and needs a longer time to gelatinize, and powder form, which is a PITA to use so few pro brewers use it).

The idea behind timing of the addition is that the active ingredient (refined collagen) needs to be gelatinized, which takes a couple minutes, but starts denaturing at 10 minutes of boiling. So Kerry recommends you add Whirfloc-T and the powder form, which has some code like PWB, at 5 mins.
