This evening, I dropped by Sprouts, a new "indoor farmer's market" here in Birmingham.  My wife said that they were supposed to have a nice craft beer selection... and boy, do they ever!

There were several great offerings; tons of Alabama beers were represented, plus they had a great assortment of breweries like Founders, Bells, and Lagunitas.

The latter really got me excited; I hardly ever see anything by Lagunitas in the stores I visit, and Sprouts stocked several varieties by them.  One, though, really caught my eye - the wildly popular Little Sumpin' Sumpin', which I know to be a huge favorite of our good pal, Brulosopher.

They kept it cold in the store, so I brought it home and moved it to the fridge.  I just pulled one out; I'm about to see what the fuss is about.

Lil' Sumpin' Sumpin' is my favorite Lagunitas beer.

Did that work?

Brulo is drunk.

So, let's see...

Brewery: Lagunitas
Style: IPA
ABV: 7.5%

Appearance: pours a brilliantly clear straw gold into my pint glass.  I get two plus fingers of fluffy off white foam.  The head recedes slowly, leaving excellent sticky lacing behind.

Aroma: befits the label's claim of "hops, malt, hops, yeast, hops, water, and hops".  Big, impressive, complex hoppiness runs this show - pine is the strongest aspect to me, but I get a really pleasant spicy citrus twist, too.  Malt is there, but very reserved.  I can't say that I've ever smelled an IPA exactly like this.

Flavor:  huge fruity hop flavor.  Bitterness is strong up front, though not out of balance.  There's an interesting suggestion of sweetness, though the balance of this beer is clearly to the bitter side.  Malt flavors are basically nonexistent.  A touch of sourness is here, and it plays really well.  Finish is bitter, though a tad less dry than I'd have expected.  Alcohol is totally hidden to me.

Mouthfeel: carbonation gives an excellent bite to this beer; mouthfeel is middle of the road.  Nowhere near what I'd call "chewy", but you'd certainly not pound it, either.

Overall: this is West Coast hopwater, and it doesn't apologize for that.  Both the hop aroma and flavor have some really interesting layering going on, though malt is clearly little more than a necessary evil in this beer.  I've tried a lot of IPAs in the past few months, and this one really does stand out.  It's not a balanced beer by any means, but that's okay - it's a great hop showcase, and fun to drink.  Also, that 7.5% ABV could really sneak up on you.  I'm very happy that I picked up a sixer of this one!

Hey guys - if you reply via email, be sure to reply to this one.  Brulo started something strange that derailed the topic.  I fixed it, but if you reply to him of the other couple of posts to the email thread, they may fall into the void.  Or start a new topic.  Or something.

Yep, you've been working.  Brulo somehow forked the thread.

You guys in Ca get it pretty fresh. Have had it from the bright at the brewery and it's much more intense than in the bottle. Good stuff. HEB started carrying it recently here in Central TX - it doesn't seem to travel all that well.

Yeah, I'm figuring that fresh is noticeably better than what I have.

I ended up taking my kid fishing, and then my wife wanted to measure our landscaping and go to garden center, so no brew day yet again on a rare free weekend day. :(

We caught a bunch of panfish (spme nice size blugills and pumpkinseeds) and a smallie,  so that was nice.

Hrm.  It looks like Chino's response is stripping out the hidden topicID, which is forcing the post to a new thread on the forums.

I'm going to start capturing the raw responses of the emails sent to the forums so that I can figure out where things are breaking!

I may be the culprit -- when I remember to do so, I have been manually stripping out all but the part of the thread ‎I am responding to in order to make my blackberry/gmail responses less painful to you all. Could this be the problem, Olan?

Responding here, about to kill the child thread spawned by this reply.

My reply kicked off a new thread, meaning that the email I responded to did not have the hidden topicID in it.  Again, I'm setting up a log today to capture everything so as to narrow down why this is happening.

Thanks!
