Today, I got a catalog from William's Brewing. My wife noticed the Grainfather on the cover, then started thumbing through it.

She had a lot of fun looking at gadgets, and even more so with yeast, hops,.and grains.  She asked if she put together a recipe off of things that sounded cool, would I brew it?

I told her sure, if she would drink some.  She has never cared for beer, won't sample mine.  I expect she was humoring me, but it was nice for her to at least act interested.

I do keep hoping I can brew something she will try (and, obviously, enjoy).

A friend of mine who used to own a brewery had a saying, "It's not that you don't like beer, you just haven't found the one that you like."  She can't do that unless she tries them at least!  ;)

I see 'discovery' flights at Good People in Donna's Future. You can sell it as you need her camera expertise for photos for the website.....

To be fair, this is the first time she hasn't been pregnant in like 20 years.

Curious. Does she drink wine? Thinking that or a mead might be a gateway.

She doesn't drink wine, either.  Well, a glass of a blush wine every rare now and then...

A friend of ours (who knew she probably liked beer, but hadn't found the right one yet) threw a tasting party a few years back. Basically, get a bunch of 22-oz. bottles for a whole mess of beers, invite a bunch of people over, and do some tastings. It was fun for everyone--beer drinkers and non-beer drinkers alike--to get to sample a lot of stuff without the commitment of drinking a whole bottle. And yes, our friend found some beers she liked!

Man. I think i need to make an algorithm of "how to get your wife interested in brewing (but be careful what you wish for)" as one of my blog posts.
What program can i use to draw this algorithm out? Though the Feminists might come beat me up if i do something like that, lol.

If she enjoys cooking and remotely enjoys the scientific part of cooking (i.e. appreciates maillard reactions, or the difference between baking powder and baking soda) then she's more than halfway there. But if she really really likes cooking or baking (or the science of it), she might take over your hobby after she figures out how freaking fun brewing is (so beware).

I'd suggest starting with hops, try different kinds, and then taste some commercial examples with the effect how long the hops are "cooked with the beer" (i.e. how long in the boil) and compare that to a curry or chilies or something in cooking, or even tea and how long the bag is in. See if she gets to the point where she can guess a mostly dry-hopped beer versus a mostly bittering-hopped beer.

Godspeed.

Hah, that would be a great blog post!

She loves to cook.  I think the big thing is she has her mind made up that she simply does not like beer.  I've tried to explain that beer comes in a rainbow of flavors, but as adventurous as she is in some things, she won't sample different beers.
