So, I had this IPA the other day, and I thought it was fantastic. It only has an 87 on BeerAdvocate, but that's really not reflective of the actual quality of this beer.

I don't know how it made it's way to GA, but I'll be looking for more of it. That Eureka hop is really something. It was super peachy and tangerine with a dank pine backing it up. It was super easy drinking too.

Marshall, Aaron, Ray, or whoever that tasted the hop chronicles beer, did you think this is a hop that could be the next citra/mosaic/equinox/galaxy? I feel like it's the closest thing to that level of profile I've tasted in a while. I think that HBC 438 might get there too, but I'm not sure yet.

I guess I should have mentioned that it's Cedar Creek's Dankasaurus IPA.

Is that a 100% Eureka hopped beer? If so, you're picking up something I certainly didn't get. If it's not single-hop, then I'd say Eureka likely is used to bolster the pungent hop character of the beer.

No way. It's good, but not that good. IMO.

It's not a single hop beer. It also has Apollo in it, which I think may be where the tangerine is coming from. The website says "This beautiful blend of flavor and drinkability showcases the truly unique Eureka hop". The can mentioned it at 05256, which I didn't know was EXP Pine Fruit/Eureka. From the looks of their other beers it kind of looks like they might use apollo/bravo as their bittering pair. Even their cream ale has both in it. I might email them and see what they will divulge.

M
aybe it's one of those dynamite combos like amarillo and simcoe. I'm not a huge fan of either of those as single hop, but together they are incredible.

OK, I'll back off on my enthusiasm a touch. But I am super stoked to try it at some point, especially in a pairing with Apollo which is not a hop I'm familiar with at all.

Hmm...you mention peach and "citrus" in your article. I wonder if what I'm picking up as "dank pine" you are describing as "resinous". Because I've admittedly never experienced "resinous" hops in a dry IPA. Only sweet IPA's, so maybe I don't exactly know what that character is like or I've been using the wrong(?) descriptor for it. To be perfectly honest, "resin" isn't an aroma or flavor, it's a physical property, so I'm not sure how that translates to hops.

I'm emailing the brewer now.

I'm back on the Eureka hype train! lol

It's a great hop, one I think will meld incredibly well with the others you mentioned, I just don't see it being all that wonderful of a single hop variety.

Gotcha. That's really what I wanted to know. Based on the BA score for that beer, others are having the same impression, so it's possible I just like it more personally than the average IPA fan, which is fine by me!

I could have sworn I shared this beer with you at NHC...

Not that I recall. The only beers I remember trying from you were your sours, and the two lager xbmts.

Fwiw... When I had the beer at Marshall's house, I found it entirely pleasant - though aromatic more so than flavorful. I found it fairly piney with a sort of generic fruitiness, that I was unable to pin down - though personally, I perceived a lot more in the pine direction than fruit.

That being said, we filled a growler and I shared it about 5-6 days later, and something changed. It got really catty and unpleasant - I'm blaming the long term growler storage and 300 miles in the car.

Personally, I suspect it's a dynamite hop to add to a blend at flameout or dryhop, though personally I prefer my ipas to be more heavily leaning to sunny delight/juicyfruit/etc.... I think this would work great to bring in some piney character to a west coast Amber or the like, where I find the pine kind of offsets some malt sweetness.

So, the brewer emailed me back with a 5 gallon recipe, if anyone wants it I'll post it, but the gist of it is that they mash hop, FWH and dry hop exclusively with Eureka and the flameout addition is a 33/33/33 combo of apollo, bravo, and Eureka, and a bittering addition at 60 with Bravo.

So, I'd guess a decent amount of flavor is coming from the Apollo and Bravo, but there is also a substantial amount of Eureka in the dry hop.

The grist is just pale malt and Munich. I bet with about double the hops this would be an incredible beer.

buddy shared it, but I think he said he got it at Hop City Krog Street. I think I saw Juice Box ATL post on twitter that they have it, So I'm guessing most well stocked beer stores ITP should have it.

Finally got around to brewing a 100% eureka hop beer. I have to agree with Matt Humbard about the pungency of this hop. I used 4oz in 5 gals and this thing smells and tastes like some of my massively hopped IPAs.

So the tangerine and peach are definitely there. I used Vermont yeast, but I don't really feel like the yeast is where the peach is mostly coming from. Mostly this thing is super dank and piney.

I'd say it's pushing on catty. I'm sure folks who don't like that flavor would object to this beer. I quite like it though because I really enjoy the dank piney quality paired with peach and tangerine.

I'd really like to try this one with some Citra or maybe el Dorado to up the fruitiness. Or maybe with galaxy to make a super dank bomb. On its own it's a maybe a bit too much in the resin/dank/catty arena.

It actually kind of reminds me of something like a super simcoe. Maybe Amarillo would pair nicely. Amarillo frequently is described as having peach notes, and it pairs perfectly with simcoe.

Anyway, it's worth trying, but it might take some experimentation to get just right.
