So, I've been toying with the idea of a BrewUnited Facebook group. A certain homebrewing internet celebrity has mentioned it to me before, as well, and is once again touting the usefulness of it.

I guess that it does make sense; it would be a way to help extend the reach of the site... after all, not everybody stalks reddit.

I guess that I would link up the various blog and article posts as they got created, and people could use it as an alternate way to communicate about beer.

What do you folks think?

I'm in favor of it. Not much effort to reach another user base.

Wasn't part of the point of BU and the email archive/interaction feature to centralize brewing knowledge into a central, searchable place?  If you have a FB group and brewing discussions take place over there, how will that effect the usefulness of this place as a knowledge repository?

Other than reconciling that point, I don't see why you wouldn't make a FB page.

It will split the discussion, that's true. But it will also extend the community's reach, which does seem to be a worthy cause.

I am *not* a facebook expert by any means, but I think maybe the thing for BU would be a "page" which is where you could publicize certain forum topics or blog posts, but discussions for the most part would still occur in the forums on BU. Comments would be available on FB as they always are, but the point of a page is publicity and engaging your target audience, not facilitating discussion like a facebook "group" does.

Dan, I think you are right. I had a "page" in my head, not a "group". I wasn't really thinking how they are indeed different things.

I think most folks use FB for a different purpose than forums-- no one is going to write a blog post on FB, but one that was published on BU could certainly be shared there. To me, FB is what I do when I'm taking a shit.

I use mine mostly the same way Marshall does, except I highlight any brewing information I see as interesting that day.  If that's all the BU page would be, then it's pretty much a no brainer.  Do it yesterday.

If you're going to use it as a discussion group, that's a bit more problematic.

Nope, I didn't really want it as a discussion platform. I wanted it as a way to share stuff, let people comment, etc.

Yeah, gonna make this happen.

100% with Gary. Save the deeper discussions for BU, do the little shit on FB.

Okay. I have to populate it, but the page now exists. https://www.facebook.com/BrewUnited
