Having gone on a bit of a hop buying spree lately, what do y'all do to keep track of what you've got in stock? I know beersmith has built in, but I hate nearly everything about beersmith besides recipe creation, and unless I am missing something, the inventory thing doesn't seem terrifically intuitive...

I use Google Spreadsheets. Here's an example of what I use for tracking my malt.

I agree that Beer Smith isn't easy, but I find that the extra time is worth it. It keeps track of your initial inventory, deducts what is required when you finalize a recipe and even handles the aging of the hops based on their manufacturing date. So the IBU numbers are more accurate. The few times that I've had problems, I sent Brad an email and was pleased to get a prompt response. I've only been using it since August, but I use it for everything including making small mods to great recipes that have been brewed with efficiencies that so far I have only seen in my dreams. (Disclaimer: I don't get a commission, I am not at all organized, and I am a bit of a computer geek)

Beersmith is amazing... it's just that, like most other aspects of the software, inventory has a big learning curve.

I used to have it on my fridge with dry erase marker. I currently need to scrub that crap off, actually...fridge surface isnt meant for it. Youre fine if you dont leave it there for long, but its been on there for a year and doesnt want to come off too easily....

At this point, tbh...I usually get a recipe in my head, start putting it in beersmith, then go double check that i have the hops i think i have.

Either that or for pale ales ill look at the hops i have for some inspiration on the recipe before i start building it.

MEK is the solvent used in dry erase markers. You can get them off damn near anything with MEK, though Isoproyl works 80% as well.

Also, I don't give two shits about my garage fridge.
