Each beer had 2 judges, so if those are your actual scores one judge gave your beer a 30 and the other gave a 40. These  are out of 50 total.

Yeah, 10 points is def outside of the usual range (which I think is generally a max of 7 pts).

Ohhh I see, I didn't realize there were 2 judges for each beer. I made up the numbers so don't worry about the spread

Ah, okay. I was going to be upset if there was a ten point spread - this was a point of emphasis.

Note that some people will see something like 28/30/29 - that beer had three judges, not two.

No the scores were 37/40. I thought that was my rank in the division and was very sad haha

Someone may have asked this earlier, but are you planning on posting some overall stats on the competition? It might be insightful to see things like highest scores per category, or the spread of scores for every category, or any number of other things, really. It'd also be interesting to see how well the best beers score to style within the limitations imposed by the competition rules.

Anyway, thanks again for all you hard work, Olan (and the site directors and judges). I'm looking forward to next year already.

37/40 is an *excellent* score, by the way. Quite a few medals were won by beers scoring ~35 points. 50 is the absolute max, and 45 is considered a world class example of a given style.

Regarding stats and such - we might do that. I need to talk to the site directors.

Thank you! I didn't know 37/40 was that good. I figured it was like a B/B- score, just going off the percentage out of 50. People must have been killing it in the cream ale division then because mine didn't make bronze. That's ok though, I'm just glad it did well

For reference, I got bronze in the American Amber with a 38/40, so cream ale was either at least a bit stiffer, or you barely missed out

Ah, maybe I got 4th place? Either way, congrats on the medal!

There are a couple of things to know.

37/40 is an excellent score, as I stated. Most of our medals went in the 35-40 range; the very highest score we gave was a 46, I believe. However, I think there was only one other that scored above 42. 40 is quite tough to get.

You're probably not going to ever see a 50. Again, 45+ is a world class example of a given style.

Now, then. Medals are not handed out by raw score only, especially in styles that have multiple flights of beer. You can't expect one pair of judges to rate 30 beers in one sitting, so it's divided into multiple sittings, often with different pairs of judges.

The top X beers per flight will then advance to a mini best of show round, where they are simply ranked. It is entirely possible for a winning beer to have scored lower than other beers in the category.

First, congrats on the Cubs winning the world series!

Second, I'm a little surprised I placed second in the Vienna Lager category with 30/34 - this isn't a complaint, mind you, I guess the style is tougher to nail with the ingredient limitations. Still, I'm happy that my first lager had a decent score, though I'm very curious now about the judges' comments (no rush, by the way). I really like that beer so I may brew it again, though perhaps with some tweaks based on that feedback.
