Do surprise insects count against the ingredient limit?  I split my Irish Red into two fermentors, one with S-04 and one with Nottingham.  The S-04 batch blew the airlock/stopper, and while it was open a rather large spider cricket found his way in and drowned.  My original plan was to taste both batches and decide which to submit, but does the cricket (and any microbes that my have come with it) put me over 7 ingredients on the S-04 batch?  Yes, I'm still looking forward to tasting the cricket brew.

Disqualified!!!

Nah, I think you are fine. Intentional insects are ingredients, accidental insects are process.

That's what I figured, but wanted to be sure.  I suppose if the S-04 batch is superior, I'll have to try "dry cricketting" on the next one.

Is this going to be an actual event that we attend? Or are we just shipping it there and waiting for results?

We don't have a planned event, per se; as this is an online competition, with judging in five different cities, we don't really have any local festivities. Now, if you are local (or can be int he area) and would like to volunteer, we can get you put in touch with the local site director - stewards, judges, and general helpers are ALWAYS appreciated. We'll feed you pizza - and we have some little gifts - for helping!

If you just want to observe, we can see if they have the room to allow for that. I know that our space in Birmingham for the best of show round is limited, but a few people could certainly drop by and observe, if they so desired.

Has a shipping deadline been established yet?  I went back and looked at all of the posts but only saw judging dates.  Also, will there be different dates for the different divisions or will they all be the same shipping deadline?

Beer will not be accepted before September 26th, and must be to the sites no later than October 7th. We will publish the shipping addresses on September 1st.

All deadlines will be the same.

Is it against the spirit of the American division to use 6-row from Canadian Malting Co.? That's all my LHBS stocks, and I would prefer to get it from them milled by the pound rather than order a bag online.

I'm curious to the answer for RockStarBrew's question as well.  It seems like the amount of online retailers that have 6-row with reasonable shipping is limited.  To ship 5 lbs worth of it to me is $18 at a minimum, with most places at over $30.

20% American 6-Row Pale Malt, plus at least another 20% of the base malt must be one (and only one) of the following: U.S. 2-Row Pale Malt, U.S. Pilsner Malt, U.S. Pale Ale Malt

I'm not judging, but, I can guess what the lawyer would say here.......I don't believe Canada has left the continent.......

Actually I have another question regarding yeast starters.

Is it okay to use DME for a starter if we decant it off?

Ah, that's a good catch.  May just be the most expensive beer I make yet then.

DME in starters is perfectly fine.
