Okay, I think that we have done enough with this to make this feature available to everyone.  I considered holding off on a widespread launch of this feature until BrewUnited becomes a reality, but I think that there is just so much value to making this happen sooner rather than later.

You may now post to the forums simply by sending an email to "[email protected]" (soon, that address will be updated for BrewUnited).  Your email will be converted to a new topic here on the forums.

If you like, you can specify a category to post to by tagging it - i.e. [Chitchat] or [Recipe Discussion] to post to the proper category.  If you don't specify one, your post will simply go into Brewing Discussion by default (though a mod may later move it, if appropriate).

Also, you may now "follow" other forum members by visiting their profile page and clicking the "Follow User" link right below the "PM Member" button.  If you follow a user, any time they post via email like this, you will receive a copy of their post to your email.  If you reply to that email, your reply will then be posted as a followup message to their forum topic.  This makes the site function like a beautiful melding of both a forum and an email list... and lets you interact with others without looking like you are hanging out on a beer forum while at work.  :)

There are a few issues to still discuss.  Do we want to get notifications if a user you follow posts directly to the forums (without using email)?  Do we want to get followup notices if someone we don't follow posts to a topic we started?  Do we want to make these options configurable on a user by user basis?  Will oddball email clients break the formatting?

These questions and more will be answered as we start to take advantage of this new feature.

Please, by all means - try it out, and let us know what you think.  Is this a great idea, or an awful one?  How can we improve it?

Two things:
1) Include the link to the post in the email.
2) Make it opt-in :)

Link is a great idea.  I'll have to add that.

It's already opt-in, sir.  I just opted the charter group in without asking.  ;)

Where do you add this tag [Chitchat] tag, in the subject only? Is it sensitive to capitalization?

Wait. What is wrong with hanging out at a beer forum while working?

The tags are subject only.  They are not sensitive to capitalization, as I cast everything to uppercase before the comparison.

Nothing's wrong, mchrispen.  But some high and mighty folks seem to think they shouldn't do so...

I'd like to see this get used just a bit more, maybe answer a couple of the questions I tossed out... I then plan to do a carpet bomb email to the membership to let them know about this.  I think it will be a HUGE deal.
