What is it with homebrew club names?  It seems like half of them - maybe more - are based around taking some beer-related word and figuring out how to turn it into an acronym.

Like, say, HOPS: Heroes Of Producing Suds

That's not a real club name (to my knowledge), but it's along the same vein of tons that I've seen.

I guess other people just like this kind of wordplay more than me?

I think the local one is MASH (Marshfield Area Society of Homebrewers).

I did see a pretty nifty beer name this weekend.

PsycHOPath or something like that.  Im sure its been used before.

My club is Society of Barley Engineers, no clever acronym. I actually had some folks come up to me at NHC saying how refreshing it was to see a club that wasn't some goofy play on words or acronym.

You mean like HOPS?

Sure wish they'd get back to me about volunteering at the Summertime Brews Festival this weekend....

Exactly like that.

I mean, I guess it's cool and whatnot.  It just seems like the majority of clubs try to do something like this.

It probably goes to my lack of imagination.  "Birmingham Homebrew Club" sounds fine to me.

I'll also allow that this could just be a symptom of my advancing age and orneriness.  Get off my lawn!

I think HOPS is really pushing it, otherwise I think the names can be pretty fun. I get a dad-joke reaction from the names. Eye roll, groan, and secretly love it.

I overheard some people complaining about this same thing at club night.

Well, I'm as guilty as they come for the use of dad jokes, so maybe I should be careful about the stones that I cast...

Here, the only one is Brew Maui Homebrew Club.  I'd say that one is pretty basic.

The club I am helping start up is called "BoH - Brewer's of the Hood"

We are located in a fairly urban area near downtown.. not as creative as others I guess, but it works..

I just came across this one.

Salacious Homebrewers in Toledo.

When I lived in So Cal I joined a great little group called Brewing Enthusiasts of the Antelope Valley region (BEAVR).

And yes our names for our beers were a little adult in nature sometimes. Our famous one is chocolate covered BEAVR nutz.

I am still a part of that club and also a part of the Gresham Mashers.
