Brewed homebrewdad's Frostfire yesterday with a buddy in the homebrew club (getting ready for our Oktoberfest competition).. we split 5 gallons of wort between the 2 of us, did separate hop schedules and plan to use different yeast.. just pitched, and will be doing Brulosopher's quick-lager method..

Certainly pushed my mash tun to its limits..

starting to get pretty consistent with hitting mash pH..

5 Gallons of wort per

Boiling away!

Didn't take too many other pictures.. I probably lost 10 lbs of water weight working out in the heat all day..

Yup. Makes it very difficult to stir. Hope lautering went alright. That much grain caused some issues for me with a Barleywine. Some rice hulls thrown in make it easier to lauter. In this case, I'd add them after I'd drained some of the wort......

Hope the beers come out great!

Looks like a great time.  lol, that mash tun certainly was at it's limit!

I need to brew that beer again.   If this fancy fast lager thing works out, I may start brewing a LOT more lagers.

Lautering was my biggest concern.. My water/grist ratio was at 1.12, which is pushing it.. and I had to hold the fly sparge arm above the tun instead of resting on top of it.. Even once the grain bed settled, the grain almost took up the full tun.. We were lucky to not have a stuck sparge, because I seriously would be lost in what to do.. I couldn't even lift the thing alone..

Wow, 1.12?  I don't think I've ever gone below 1.2ish.  Let me know how that beer turns out for you!

Are you doing a traditional lager or using Marshall's scary fast lager method?

Yup! I was in doubt that'd we make it.. We were either lucky, or good, or both? I wouldn't recommend going that low.. it was pretty much a cooler full of grain, with some water in it..

I'm using the WLP820, while my buddy is using a kolsch yeast.. going to give marshals quick lager method a shot, it is my first lager and want to see if it'll be done in time for our contest.. We shall see..

Still gotta look at starting my brew United contest beer!

I think that it will be interesting to compare the two, no doubt.  Yeah, I'm in the midst of my first fast lager... color me nervous.  I though lagrs were supposed to be character-building, tortuous processes that took months.  This seems like cheating.

What are you brewing for the BU Challenge?

I was thinking the same thing with this lager, but I don't think I'd have enough time if I tried to go the long route.. I wish I could have decoction mashed, but we had enough of a challenge without..

I was pretty happy with the kolsch styles I've brewed in the past.. So that's the style I'm going for..

Using this week to come up with a recipe, hopefully it goes as smoothly as this weekends brew day did
