I've had the opportunity to try a couple of different BU competition beers so far. You know, for all of the whinging about the terrible rules and awful ingredients, I have yet to have a bad beer.

The one I had tonight is - in my opinion - a real candidate for a medal in at least its own category. I told the brewer that I would keep my review to myself, but this one was a treat.

I believe the contention was not "good beer can't be made with these rules" the contention was "these rules will make worse beer than without them"

Also, if you stick to a few select styles, you don't have to do anything weird to make a to-style beer. Kolsch for example.

Brown Porter on the other hand, good luck to those who attempted that.

Yeah, that was an interesting challenge (which was why I chose it). I doubt I did a great job but at least I got it dark enough.

Yeah, but do you have a snowbank to chill in yet?

He's using the snowmelt from his last beer as his brewing liquor.

Ugh. Fuck that. Im (hopefully) still a couple weeks from frost.

Though for some reason it feels like its normally cooler this time of year, and were already bordering on frost at this point. Maybe my memory is just worse than i think.

I would take 26F over 100F any time. Cold I can deal with (just add layers), extreme heat is another matter entirely.

Yeah, but 26 isnt -40.

There comes a point where putting on more layers doenst do much other than making you into a marshmallow.

Pretty normal, yep. While I don't prefer high temps, I'll take heat over cold all day long, I fucking hate shivering, and layers make me sweat. Ugh.

The Brown Porter was a tough one.  I toasted my grains on a BBQ and had no consistency.  The wort came out amazing.  The wild yeast that went to town on it, not so good!

Attempt #2 happens in the next day or so in hopes that I can get it done in time.
