In Europe it is called CaraPils, in the US CaraFoam.
If you read a little German, poke around at hobbybrauer.de/forum/index.php You'll see they are not obsessed with "German brewing" although they are more hardware oriented than for example the British brewers who are more pragmatic.
Also, Germany has states, like the US and Bayern is one of them and certainly is not representative for the whole of Germany and Munich is not for Bayern and then there is Frankonia.
I don't understand this "mystification" of German beer and brewing, maybe had to much of the "bad" ones. In the basics it is just SMASH for all the paler versions and maybe two malts for the darker ones. Noble hops, maye even aged a bit to have the beta acids dominate and very thorough technical brewing. Belgian brewing is not that different, minimal ingredients (and sugar), good yeast, good process. Also in the UK you can get great ones. Just comparing in quality, a Spalter Helles is not better or worse than a Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter. Both very different beers, from a very different origin, of the highest standard, targeting the same audience. Both utterly balanced.

Kidmoxie, do you have any supporting evidence that they are the same? From what I understand carapils has no diastatic power, while carafoam does.
I just would like to know because I am doing a 100% carafoam beer this upcoming sunday for shits and giggles.
Side note: where the hell can I find chit/spitz malt? Ever since I saw Kris England's Munich Hell recipe using 100% spitz I have been wanting to try it.

They are literally the same because Weyermann can't market their CaraPils as such in the US, so they changed the name to CaraFoam.

@darthKOTOR: What did Kris say about Spitz malt when you asked him seven months ago? I can't find any reference to Spitz malt anywhere else beyond the recipe and your questions. If you didn't get an answer, I can ask him for you.

Chicago Brew Works has it as well...only in 1# qty;s, but I'm sure if you called them they'd order a larger qty. They are my go-to for odd and specific grains. Their selection is incredible.

@ Chino Brews. If you could pick his brain for a minute or two that'd be fantastic. I have seen pretty much 0 references to 100% spitz/chit beer fucking anywhere, outside of that one recipe. I have searched high and low. I reached out to Kris on twitter and then email, but didn't get a reply. I know he is a busy dude so I just never got around to buggin him about it again.
@ KidMoxie, I am aware of the naming issues with Carapils, but they seem to be a different kind of malt. Breiss claims that there are no enzymes present, so no convertability, while some sources claim that Carafoam has a Kolbach index of 100-150. Fully self-convertable.
I am just emailed Weyermann this morning about this issue, hope to hear from them soon.

To sum up the Carapils/Carafoam situation
Weyermann CaraPils = Weyermann Carafoam
Weyermann CaraPils =/= Briess Carapils
Weyermann Carafoam =/= Briess Carapils
