> Vanilla Gorilla is a hugely underrated beer. I don't like much from Red Brick, but that one is the best they make, IMO.

I haven't had it in a while, but when I have had it it was full bodied, roasty, with a solid but pleasant vanilla note. I don't like smoke in my beer and I didn't really get any in it. Maybe they upped the smoke malt to make it come out a bit more and the servers at the bar didn't like it?
Maybe it was an off keg?
Like I said, I'm not a big Red Brick fan, but I liked that one when I had it.

What they had on tap was smokey and syrupy sweet. Like drinking pancake syrup mixed with liquid smoke. It was pretty vile. I'm surprised they put it into distribution. Maybe it's been fixed since I've had it, but that one taster was enough to swear me off of it forever.

It is a sweet beer. I tried aging some and it got pretty terrible because there was nothing left to balance just plain sweetness. And the body began to suffer as well.
It's never been smoky when I've had it, and I hate smoke beer so I feel like I would have noticed it. I think the first time I had it was the first batch they made of it when it was in the brickmason series.
It does sound like an Olanbier doesn't it.

You'd think that, but it's marketed as a smoked vanilla imperial porter.

Anyway, shaddap. My wife was cool and picked me up some beer, trying to get me things I'd never tried. That is the point of this thread.

Oh, she's definitely awesome for getting you fresh Scuplin.

2) I tried a different beer and got confused (see: slight intoxication)

Have a Pineapple Sculpin if you can find it.

I agree grapefruit just comes across as muddled and not all that interesting, except maybe as a radler. I thought the pineapple was well done and complements the hops well. Pineapple is really tough to work with in beer and mead.
