Yes, this kind of stuff should become more common amongst brewers. The subtitle on the lab handbook is perfect, "Brewing without a blindfold"

As an extension on your test, there are all kinds of biochemical indicator kits available where a colour change tells you something. Sadly they are quite pricy but with enough home brewer interest the price could come down. IMHO it would perfectly fit within the distribution systems of the yeast labs.

Totally. People should spend their time running simple lab tests rather than racking beers to secondary or wondering what fruit they should ruin their beer with. :)
