I just received AG kit from MoreBeer (the Tart of Darkness, to be precise), and the crush on the 2-Row is pretty bad: quite a high proportion of barely damaged, whole kernels.

I love how they bagged each grain separately, and the crush and packaging on the rest of the recipe and my Super Grifo capper was world class.

I didn't request a double crush. I forgot to ask for the 10% AHA discount also. I don't order online much, and always forget.

How would you approach something like this if you don't have a mill? Just slink into NB and crush it? I doubt it's worth the double expense of shipping it back and them sending me a new kit. Or would you complain?

Maybe I could just do a 4.5-gallon batch. I'm only planning to take 4-gal. into my 4-gal. secondary anyway.

I'd send them a polite email with photos of said grains.  Perhaps they would just send you another set of grains...?

You might also ask about getting the 10% as a credit, some places will do things like that.

If you don't have access to a crusher, you could go to a homebrew store and see if they'll help you out.  Just buy something while you're there.

Just my thoughts.

Actually - I think MoreBeer would want to know. If they need to put more Q/A on the milling front they will. Sounds like someone rushed and didn't look at it.

I have bought a lot of stuff (fermenters and gear, no recipe kits) from them and worked with their customer service on the occasional problem. Always been helpful. I bet they would make this right... perhaps even with the AHA discount.

Agreed with Brian. Just send them an email. I've heard they are good about replacing grains.

If not just buy a hydrometer at the HBS and get them to crush it.

Agreed.  Let them know, they have a good reputation.

Well. I tried not to make a big deal about it, mentioning the poor crush, asking how it will affect my efficiency (typically 72%) relative to their recipe standardization, and asking if they would give me a small credit if I needed to augment due to poor efficiency. Their reply was that if I miss my gravity I should add DME, and there would be no credit for it. Maybe I should have taken a more aggressive approach. I didn't want to make a big deal about it and incur the waste of more ingredients being shipped out to me.

I don't care about recipe volume, but because the poor crush is only on the 2-row, I'll probably end up doing some math, mashing them separately, and adding DME or 2-Row to keep this dark recipe's balance.

On the AHA discount, no dice. More Beer offers it only for in-store purchases.

Ouch.  I'm surprised they didn't respond better than that.
