mchrispen asked for other bittering ingredients than hop for his Pratchett brew, the beers is brewn but I came across a nice book on bitter in cooking.

Jennifer McLagan
Bitter : a taste of the world’s most dangerous flavor, with recipes

A nice cookbook on bitter ingredients and what/how to cook with them. Can be inspirational to a brewer, what alternatives to hops could be used or what flavours to use in combination with beer bitterness.

This is some very useful stuff!

I know that Matt is at NHC this week, so I don't know how often (if at all) he will check the forums.

I'm able to read some of the table of contents in a preview.  Some of this seems about right (cocoa, thistle, etc.) and some seem a little too dangerous (tobacco).  I'm not sure how much flavor some of the stuff in between would contribute like endive or bitter melon.  While it might be an interesting experiment, I'd be afraid something like bitter melon would end up like CCB's Cucumber Saison ... which I thought was more or less like drinking a salad.
