For you guys that are using STC1000+ (black box)

what are your delays (cd - cold delay, hd - hot delay) set to?

I'm thinking I need to make sure they are at least 10 or 12 minutes so I don't kill my compressor...

Mine's been running at 3 minutes for years on an unmodified STC-1000. What helps is to add thermal mass if the freezer isn't completely full.

Good point. May need to add a couple dummy buckets of water or something.

I set mine to 10 minutes.

It seems the value priced freezers (sub $1200) these days are much more sensitive to compressor cycles. Talked with an appliance repairman before I bought my two uprights. He said the new energy saver modes have increased the quality of insulation and pressure switches that determine door opening have allowed manufacturers to use cheaper compressors and switches. He recommended taking any measures possible to keep the compressor cycles as few as possible. I bought my uprights on sale at Lowes and purchased the extended warranty (repairman's recommendation) out to 3 years to cover any repairs. He also recommended removing any beer and putting the shelves in should repair be necessary and don't mention any temp controllers. However I believe the conicals and brewing rig will be a dead giveaway.
