Does anyone else feel that pale ales have become such a trend that they are just getting overdone. The market is being flooded with them and there are so many out there that taste exactly alike or aren't very well done, but people produce them because they know they are selling. It makes me weary to try them as much anymore.

It's just what is hot right now.  To me, it's not the pale ales, but the teeth meltingly bitter IPAs that are overdone. 

Show me some skill, show me some hop flavor and aroma as opposed to just bitter bitter bitter.

There are almost 4,000 commercial breweries in the U.S., and every one of them has to have a standard lineup:
  • A blonde ale or wheat beer for non-beer drinkers (or Shock Top/Blue Moon drinkers)
  • A dark beer, such as a stout, a porter, or, heaven forbid, a brown ale
  • Something foreign (Belgian, German lager, or maybe something English)
  • An American Pale Ale or American Amber.
  • An IPA. Or 3 or 4.
  • A high alcohol offering, probably a double IPA that fits in the above category.

It gets so boring. Especially when the beers are meh, and tap handles 7 - 12 in their tap room are filled with experiments gone awry, usually involving some spice, or another one of their IPA variations.

I completely agree. How would you change that up though? I noticed some breweries have been starting to creep into the sour ale area, which I've been enjoying.

I was at Wiseacre Brewery last summer when they had one of the most amazing selections I've ever seen on tap. They had in house only Porter, Mild, Session IPA, Rauchbier, and Berliner Weisse in addition to the Pilsner and IPA that they can and distribute. What was the majority of the crowd drinking? They were drinking the Pilsner and IPA that they could buy at any local grocery store. There's a reason all breweries stick to a standard lineup. Not every person and the SO they dragged along to the brewpub is going to want something unfamiliar or adventurous.
