I had intended to brew my Frankenyeast IPA yesterday... but my cooler issues returned and were worse. Stupid me didn't think about looking at the ball valve assembly between brews; it seems that my rubber washer has warped over time. No matter what I did, I couldn't get it to seat properly.

I went to Lowe's, picked up another metal washer for inside, got a tight seal between the nipple and the rubber washer, the metal washer forces it all into place. However, the metal washer apparently doesn't seal perfectly to the inside of the cooler - nothing I could do prevented a steady drip.

I'm now ordering some food safe silicone caulk. Hopefully, this will take care of the issue.

Bleh.

My Frankenyeast xBmt beers are almost done... I'll reserve judgement until after they're kegged...

I'll definitely be interested to see what you think. I'm hoping for fruity esters... who knows?

I don't understand What you did... But a washer on the inside would require an Oring or flexible washer on both sides to have any hope of sealing.

Clearly, I don't understand what I did, either. I can't see to locate a flexible washer or o ring that works, so I feel like silicone is my best best.

It sounds like the bulkhead has deformed the inner wall of the cooler and/or pulled through some.

Mine did that and I just replaced the cooler. Great time to upgrade.

Yeah, if the silicone doesn't do the trick, it'll be time for a new cooler. My wife is actually pushing me to do that, as this one has served me well for three years. But I'm loathe to not try the $8 solution before I go the $50 route.

That just makes a $50 problem into a $58 solution IME ;)

Speaking from experience, of course.

I know, I know... but I figure the $8 gamble is worth it. Plus, hey... I can always find something to do with silicone, right?

Well, the $8 fix worked. Not the first time around, mind you; my wife really started pushing me to buy a new cooler, but I gave it one more shot. Really slathered the silicone on... and voila, it now holds water again!

Granted, I'm now two weeks out from brewing. Should have been enjoying the beer, and will just be brewing it... but hey, I'm up and running again.

Yeah, I'm starting to keep an eye on Craigslist. My mini fridge is trying really hard to die.

To be perfectly fair, the mini fridge was a hand me down, and is at least 20 years old, likely older.
