I got a brew demon brew kit for Christmas and after brewing the included extract kit (which turned out pretty bad) I am looking to redeem myself with some easy extract brews that will get me hooked. I also started a one gallon mead last week and I can't wait to try that when it's ready. I am really exited about making brewing a fun hobby for myself!
I also like to make and tinker and homemade stir plates look interesting. Any advice on that?
Also I want to thank everyone who repeatedly answers noob questions from us new guys. You guys rock!

Welcome to the group!
The website Stirstarters (javascript:nicTemp();) has a pretty good description of the process, including a wiring guide. There are also a ton of guides on HomeBrewTalk. Sometimes it seems complicated, but it's actually quite easy.
Side note: I grew up in MN and lived in Winona for about 7 years before moving out here. Do me a favor: go enjoy a soup and sandwhich from Acoustic Cafe for me.
Edit - the link is wonky, but still works.

I will give that a look, Thanks!
My girlfriend's grandmother also highly recommends the Acoustic Cafe but we have still never been. Our old standby is the Blue Herein. I am away for college, but I will have to check that out when I head back for a weekend!

Also were you brewing while in the area? I still haven't tracked down a good LHBS and I was wondering what you did if you were brewing at that time.

No, unfortunately not. I've only been brewing for a little over two years, and I've been out here for 10 years now. I just did a quick search and it looks like the Bluff County Co-op sells homebrew stuff. It looks like it's either there, or you'll have to head over to La Crosse and go to B Brothers Brewing Supply. Or order online.

Damn, I got everything for my mead at Bluff Country, but their selection is very lacking and B Brothers has gone out of business :/. I am at college in Platteville, WI and there is a LHBS about half an hour away in Debuque that I am curious to check out. Thank you for checking though :)

No problem!
I still can't believe you never had a sandwich at Acoustic. That's crazy talk. Get one with whatever meat you like, and every topping (except onions for me). They really can't be beat.
