I had two 5g buckets of water from my softener-bypassed tap each with a half of a campden tablet sitting serenely at the bottom of it.  Seemed like I should have crushed it up, so I washed up, grabbed a potato-masher and mashed them both.  Did I do the right thing?

The dose is 1/2 tablet for 10 gallons water. The whole tablet in the 10 gallons probably won't be a problem though. Yes, crush them up next time before you add them.

If you crush it, it dissolves almost instantly.  Mine are very easy to crush - I break them into quarters with my fingers, then just grind them up over the pot, again with my fingers.

The guy at my local supply said the whole tab would be ok, so I went with that.

Sure, it will be okay - but all you need is a half tablet per ten gallons (or a quarter tablet per five).

I always grind mine up and have no issues.

I use a whole tablet in my water. Don't worry about it, the dose is so small even with that much of it.
