So randomly had this idea and was "encouraged" (rightfully) to start a thread about it instead of hijacking a different thread. I got excited.
Anyways, what would you guys think of a Homebrew Dad podcast? I see it as a once a week podcast, maybe 15-30 minutes. I'm not totally positive what the content would be, but I would love input from everyone!
Ideally, it would be a different person doing it each week (though they can repeat, so if four guys did it one guy would be responsible for one podcast per month) and that way the work could be split up.
What do you guys think? What would you like to see? Some feedback I've gotten already is a transcription (tough but do-able, I have access to speech software) and maybe a podcast about brewing science, so about specific reactions and such.
Thoughts?

At this point, I think the only quality podcasts are Basic Brewing, BeerSmith, and The Sour Hour. Everything else has devolved into locker room talk or is just plain boring.
It would require effort from multiple people to maintain a weekly podcast of any quality.

Agreed, plus consistent content would be difficult. I think there is a need for more quality podcasts, but it would be a lot of work and would require a lot of planning.

That isn't to say it shouldn't be explored, just really considered. You'd have to find a way to do filler content that isn't boring. Perhaps a discussion of already posted blog content? Sort of like a week in review for people too busy to read. Q&A and beer reviews might also take up some slack.
There's also the issue of $. I don't see anyone doing this for free for too long. Not to say there's big bucks to be made (there's not), but you would at least need to cover hosting of the audio files and give people contributing to the podcast a little something for their troubles. If nothing else, it would be funding to do more research/experiments/etc. That would have to be worked out in an amicable way.

All good points.

I think production quality is important, unfortunately. I have many friends that are podcasters that have stopped because of the demands of putting out a decent product. The BN has devolved a bit - there is a place for that kind of fun - but I don't find it particularly useful or entertaining. Chip is still struggling to make enough to cover the costs of his Chop and Brew... I also liked Marshall's beer reviews, but he seems to have stopped doing those.
Perhaps a place to start is not a podcast but perhaps a google+ Hangout to discuss some of the blogs and interesting posts here. Just need to find a time that might work for a variety of folks... and maybe just once a month. Everyone grab a beer and log in. Perhaps drive the agenda through a topic page here at the website.

I like that idea, mchrispen.
I don't see us consistently having interesting content. The first couple months would be fine, especially if we got enough people pitching in and all that. But I don't think I could do, say, a show a month even and stay fresh.
A hangout, even monthly, would be pretty cool. It could be like our own interpretation of a homebrew club. Maybe we send a couple of people a beer (i'd like to start doing this anyways) and they can talk about what they think of it. We can sort of just chat. Maybe have a little bit of "business" where we discuss national events, then maybe discuss some of the bigger informative posts and exbeeriments done recently, etc.

I'm on board with that idea, maybe have a round table discussion of a beer or of a blog that got posted that week, or even just a concept.

I thought the problem with Chop and Brew was that Chip doesn't really have a lot of time to put into it because of his day job. I mean, he taped a ton of stuff from NHC2014 and only put out one video. Those were no-brainer episodes and require very minimal editing. Same thing with the last episode and the tasting notes. Other than some of the equipment (which I thought was partially subsidized by the original BrewingTV), I don't see that he has a ton of money sunk into producing any given episode of C&B.

The gear necessary to do a reasonably quality job is expensive.
uberg33k - you might be right about Chip. I know the quality of what he does at Summit and the old BrewingTV was much better. His house was also recently burglarized - so not sure what all was taken. Shame - he is a great guy and very passionate about brewing.
Skype could also possibly work, but would take a good deal of organization to get everyone into a good list to make the calls. I have used Google + several times - and like the more informal setup. Still, everyone that joins will have to have a google+ account... some might object (it is Google - and they are a bit free and loose with privacy sometimes).

Oh crap. I hadn't heard he had his place busted into. That sucks and might explain why C&B has been slow to update lately.
I did see pics of him at Rahr with a camera, so I guess he still has some gear.

I'm not taking a stand on whether this is a good idea or not, but I'll note that I find many of the BeerSmith vcasts to be very helpful, and the production quantity there is circa 2001 Skype-like. Production values can be important, but good content is even more important.
