So I took my dog for a walk the other day and mapped out a route that'd take me through some woods near my house that I hadn't properly explored yet. Long story short I found TONS of licorice ferns

So I was thinking maybe I should see about making a beer featuring them. Anyone got a tried and true licorice beer recipe? or thoughts on a beer recipe that might make a good base for a brew featuring licorice?

Here's one small patch (Malamute for scale):

Don't know the ferns, but if it tastes like real licorice try it in a porter or not too dark Belgian (Verboden Vrugt (Forbidden Fruit)).

I'm not sure if licorice fern is a direct replacement for licorice root, but stouts and porters work.  As I pointed out over Twitter, it's also good for a root beer / hard root beer.

I know this doesn't really apply, but the bock I brewed had some subtle licorice notes to it (from the yeast, not from actual licorice).  It sounded strange, but it really worked well.

That forbidden fruit sounds interesting. I'm having trouble finding much info about a recipe for it though due to a yeast strain with the same name, thanks Obama.

I'll just make up something totally off the wall and try it.

Here's a good one on a dutch board, it goes for the taste of the "old" version, not the current. Tarwemout = wheat malt Sinaasappelschil= orange peel, zoethout = licorice

I love, love, love all the obscure (to the US audience) references you bring to the table ingoogni
