I finally got the time to finish a post on how to read malt specifications.  It seems like hops and yeast get all our attention now a days and I wouldn't want malt to get jealous.

I can't be that smart, I flipped the variables in my color equations.  That's fixed now.

I'm also being told by /r/TheHopyard that you can't really grow hops in containers.  Clearly, I am not very smart then.

Huh.  I thought your hop article was fantastic... I used it as my guide.  Guess my hops are not going to hit their full potential, then... mine are in containers.

Well, I tried to emphasize that anyone growing the way I outlined will not hit commercial yields.  It works, but you're dwarfing the plant ... more or less the same way bonsai work.  You'll still get a yield and it should be on the order of several ounces dry weight ... up to a pound or so I'd say max.  That's still a good yield for a single homebrewer and it's certainly an easier setup to maintain.  I wouldn't want to try to make a living off it though.

By the analytics, it seems no one cares as much about malt as they do hops.  Traffic on this article is sad.

Let's be honest, if I get a few ounces off of each plant, I'm probably happy.

Well, you are shooting for a nerdier crows with malt analysis than you do with "grow hops easy"... so, there's that.

Wait for the weekend... my stats always double Sat/Sun. I assume folks are looking at stuff while brewing or they are bored.

What is weird to me is that my interview with the dud from Black Lands Malt still gets a lot of traffic. It was a weak interview but I guess interesting to folk... my malt analysis post is one of the lowest traffic'd posts ever.

Don't let the bad traffic get you down! Please don't shoot nerds... we need new iPhone designs and... I still want a robotic cat

The horde wants to be fed and doesn't like to think. They want wizzards and magic, Harry Potters of Sweet & Sour beer with recipes & ready mades.  The want xbeerimenters who tell  "fuck starters", nobody tastes the difference, "fuck different yeasts", they all taste the same. You can make beer in 5 minutes time. (though the horde hasn't figured out that they are his 'xperiment)  j/k

The splitting of malting and brewing is a sad thing, every brewer used to be a maltser in the old days. Old brewing books are as much about malting as about brewing and rightly so. I have great respect for the guy behind "Brewing Beer The Hard Way", he's doing it right. The maltsers have stole a big chunk and we are "degraded" to semi-extract brewers.


Sorry, had an depressing experience today. I was at a small brewery and they where brewing a beer for a gipsy brewer. The guy had no clue what was going on, so I asked him a few things. He had actually no brewing experience, just picked a recipe from the internet he thought to be ok and had it brewn. Great graphics for the lable, ... it will sell.

Well, I was hoping to lure some people over and realize it's not as hard as they think.  Oh, well.  I'm not too bummed mchrispen, I've got something else pretty unique coming up for Father's Day and then there's my marathon review of the NHC conference talks.  That won't get traffic, but it's fun and I feel it's helpful to get some notes out there to help people trying to search particular topics.

I love that you called out the dude behind Brewing Beer The Hard Way, ingoogni!  I love that blog.  Did you know he's working on a book?  And I appreciate what you're saying.  We do lose a bit by not malting our own grain, but remember, we do gain something in having access to malt types that weren't available to our brewing forefathers.  I do hope to try my hand at malting soon.
