Isn't this supposed to be pretty hyped up?  I'm underwhelmed.

I had it a few weeks ago.  I found it to be very ordinary.

Fine, but ordinary.

Kinda how I feel about a lot of breweries lately. Stuff I had at Club Night at NHC makes most commercial stuff pale in comparison :)

Is the hype simply "Heres a pretty hoppy, pretty good pale ale that wont get you wasted"?

I mean, my pale ales arent *special* per se, but thats roughly the point behind it, and people seem to like it a lot.

IPAs are great, but theres so much room on the market for the 'middle of the ground'.  Sessionable, and not melt your face off bitter (to counteract high ABV and to an extent too much sweetness/crystal malt in many IPAs, imo)

I have to agree with @Necropaw. Ray, are you sure you don't suffer from "Lupulin Shift", as Vinnie Cilurzo would say, from living on the West Coast?

I'm not saying All Day is on par with PtE (within it's category), or even that it's the best session IPA out there, but in terms of mass market session IPAs from craft brewers, I put it on par with Easy Jack or Goto IPA.

The other thing you have to consider is that the Midwest is known for more balanced beers, most of Founders' beers are like that, and it's not everyone who like craft beer.

See my complaint is that is was overly thin, watery, and nothing to really not with hop aroma (I might be spoiled in that regard with homebrew).

It really could have been "more" in any direction and been better to me.

I keep almost buying the All Day IPA, but skip out on it. But speaking of underwhelming, I just had the Lagunitas IPA. The hoppyness wasn't too bad, but the malt was too thick and sweet to make it enjoyable. I drank it pretty fast just to be able to order something else.

I liked it last time I had it, but that was a while ago. How fresh is it? It was super fresh when I had it.

Agreed with Derek. Beer at club night was better than pro night.

Honestly, it probably wasn't very fresh. I had it at a sushi place, known for super strong cocktails, dance music, and sushi. I should have known better, but the last time there I had a couple mai tais that messed with me a little too much the next day.

Though I don't think time would make the beer more malty and sweet. It would lose a little bitterness and hoppyness, but I imagine the malt wouldn't change much.

Beer, IPA especially, absolutely gets more sweet as it gets older IMO. Something with oxidation reactions and staling , combined with hops dropping out definitely leaves a stickly kind of sweetness to my taste buds.

I agree with Ray.

Also, for the record - I wasn't expecting a hop bomb with Founders All Day.  But I also wasn't expecting one dimensional, "meh" beer.

I've had some great APAs - you guys ought to have one of Greg's some time.  This beer, on the other hand, is just kind of boring.

Now, as for Lagunitas... I've had their plain IPA, and while I didn't find it to be sweet, I wasn't just wowed by it.  Little Sumpin' Sumpin', on the other hand... that one wowed me.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Olan. These guys can make a pale better than mine. It is one beer of mine, though, that is consistently good.

Drinking it again... Better... Not amazing, it must have been over carbonated before.

I have been underwhelmed my many session and IPAs these days... all a riff on the same thing - crap ton of hops - usually out of balance and extremely bitter. Even for Pale Ales. That said - I still find Pliny the finest and most consistent and oddly balanced despite the scathing bitterness. My second favorite - Bell's Two Hearted. I kept going back to the Bell's booth for some mercy after so many ridiculous IPA (many with real flaws, DMS or Diacetyl) at the Expo. I would compare it to returning to a good solid pilsner after chewing a hop pellet. Stone had a IIPA on tap that frankly tasted like chewing garlic with a few cones of columbus... just not good, and at 9% abv 4 ounces was too much. My lupulin shift has reversed I guess. I wish they would focus more on making really good beer first - and more care in balancing hop flavors. That said, the Green Flash Golden Promise Mosaic smash was really nice - but I wouldn't drink more than one in a sitting.

I need to readdress Lagunitas. After trying a "flight" there in Petaluma, I was so hammered half way through that I went to sleep at 2:00 and woke up at 1:00 am thinking it was morning. Not saying they were bad, but the flight was a ridiculous 27 4 ounce pours. Not the way to savor the flavor.

For a Founders beer - that All Day was fairly middle of the road. They brew much better beers for sure. I really want it to be much drier, less sweet and better balance in the aggressive hopping. More cascade and less centennial?
