Same supplier as Dan, almost always use Grade B.

I do the same thing, but carbon filter the vodka for no good reason. I have it in my head that it produces a smoother extract. I split the beans, scrape the inside into the container with the vodka (I use four beans for 8 ounces of vodka), and then add the beans as well. I don't really shake on a daily basis, just shake it when I open the cupboard for something. After four to six weeks, it's awesome. Then coffee filter, bottle, and distribute among the family.

Vanilla sugar though, that sounds awesome.

I just cleaned out the beans from my last batch and they smell amazing. I bet you could add these to beer and it would be awesome. I might add them to a beer after they go in the sugar.

I have some RIS just sitting, could easily split off a gallon to add the beans and maybe some lactose to. Sounds amazing actually. My last Chocolate Milk stout (37 in comp) had a little vanilla in it. Just barely noticeable, I think it really brings out the chocolate flavors and helps get a smoother, milk chocolate sort of character.

We made vanilla extract like...10 years ago.  I bet we still have it in the cupboard.

Vanilla extract is said to age like wine. It might be amazing.

We did extract as christmas gifts/favors a few years back. Everyone loved it and it was really tasty. I didn't mind sipping it straight.

Well, Dan came through - I got three vanilla beans in the mail today.  My wife mentioned the caramel/vanilla/hazelnut idea again, and I told her I was thinking seriously about doing it.

Then - brace yourselves - she told me that she would try it.  Only this beer, she says... but she will do it.

Considering how she loves to tell me how gross beer is, this is a HUGE breakthrough for her.

So yeah, the big Chirstmas caramel beer is gonna get vanilla and hazelnut, at least in part of it!

Proof that your wife really, really does love you. (D'awww)

I mean, hitting the half dozen mark in kids (and then surpassing it) probably already told you that much, but still!

||she loves to tell me how gross beer is

A friend of mine who never drinks beer and thinks the same way your wife seems to do once challenged me "you can't make a beer I'll drink a full glass of". Two months later he was happily sipping away. The trick was to leave the hops out, many people can't stand it. I made a lightly spiced gruit ale with low bitterness. I can imagine one based on caramel/vanilla/hazelnut, but you'll need a very light hand with the vanilla.

Olan, is she a wine drinker? Maybe she would like sours or saisons?

She'll drink the rare glass of wine, but is not really a wine drinker, per se.

She has said that yes, she will try this caramel/vanilla/hazelnut concoction, so we'll see.

What is up with list post? I posted my comment at what I thought was the end of the thread then saw there were another 4 threads with the same title.... Why is it breaking up the same thread into multiple email threads?

Hrm. I'm not seeing that on this end.

I have seen threads get split before (it's why I added the tool to "roll up" two threads), but since the last fix, I have not seen it.

Search your emails for the subject "Getting my wife interested". I think you'll see multiple threads with that subject line. On the forum I think you got it where it doesn't do that there, but at least in gmail, it seems to create multiple threads.

I think it has something to do with the presence or lack of a "RE:"
