At first I thought there was a thread here on this, but I didn't see it.  I know there are a couple of links already here, but I just wanted to attempt to make a centralized thread for this part of the process for the upcoming competition.

Some of you have already done your roasting, how did you do it?  And how well did it turn out?  Did you find that toasting the Pilsner versus the Munich had a better result?

I purchased quite a bit of excess grains for toasting, to see how everything turns out.  Until we move in to our new place right at shipping time for this competition, we don't have an oven...so I'm left with trying out some other methods for toasting.  Going to try a BBQ, as well as let others sit in wrapped foil over a fire pit for a short amount of time.

Olan I can't find the link that had the video you made where you toasted your grains.

I'm using a proprietary method that I will reveal after shipping time, or something....

It probably gives me no advantage whatsoever.

Baked in the oven at 200 F for 20-30 minutes in an attempt to create something close to Amber malt. No complaints with it in the ESB. The Scotch Ale is too monolithic at this point to pass any judgment.

+1 testingapril.

I also tried a new method. I will do a blog post after the competition.

This is not mine, but it was on imgur with no copyright notice, so I assume it's in the public domain.

I like to follow the brewer's ethic, and not hold back secrets.  :P

That's a cool image!  I figure on the BBQ, I'll have those things on there for a short period of time.  The fire pit, likely the same thing.  We'll see!  I plan to do a very, very small mash with each test run, and see how it comes out.  If anyone is interested, I'd be happy to mail out some of the grains that have been toasted along with the method, that way you can see if it's what you might try before submissions.

I was tempted to not share how it goes before, but I wouldn't have any clue where to start had others not done the same.  I can't wait to see the blog posts that pop up after this competition to see how some others are going about it.
