Has anyone done a side by side or have any comparison between these 2 strains?

The descriptions look pretty similar (especially "finishing a bit sweet") but I don't have access to Wyeast unless I order it online.

From what I've gathered, 1318 (Boddingtons) is a different strain than 002 (Fullers), but that if you've only access to the latter, it's about as close as you'll get. For what it's worth, I don't think we need to be nearly as concerned about shipping yeast as we have been. I recently used a pack of 1956 shipped from Texas, it ended up taking 6 days to get here and was warm upon delivery, took off and fermented like a champ. I've also receive quite a bit of yeast from TYB that ended up shipping warmer than I thought was ideal, never had an issue. The 1 day turnaround we get from MoreBeer, even without the ice pack, probably has little if any negative impact.

I've never been too worries about shipping yeast. I live in Alabama, and have received warm yeast (and frozen yeast in the winter), and never had an issue.

I should really order some yeast from TYB before it gets too cold to ship. Theres a difference between alabama's 25 degree winters and my -40 ones ;)

Anyone ever use their midwestern ale? Not really sure its worth paying that much for when i have vermont ale and 1056 for my pale ales/ambers already....

I wonder if i still have an old vial of hessian pils in the fridge, too....i might not actually *need* to buy anything from them...heh.

Yeah, to be honest, 25 degrees is pretty cold for us. I mean, we do usually get into the teens for a couple of days a year, but we often stay above freezing, too.

I think it's yeast dependent. I've had yeast get stupid hot and ferment like a champ, and I've had yeast get stupid hot and take days to take off on the plate. I switched to ordering yeast from Rebel Brewer because they can get it to me in a day.

Midwestern ale has to be Bell's right? You could always just culture it up out of some bottles. Buy a sixer for $10 and get free yeast.

I used 1318 in my BU mild and it did not have a good time. It should have been a massive overpitch and it just fermented in fits and starts. barely any krausen. I want to try it in an IPA, but I need to get a new healthy culture.

I did really like the flavor profile though. And a buddy of mine used it in a barleywine that I thought was transcendent. It was a few beers in when I tried it, but I remember thinking at the time that it was a 45+ point beer. I absolutely loved it, and the ester profile was what I really liked.

Two hearted is the main one i get from bells here, and i find it disgusting. :(

Thats 100% because of earlier in the boil centennial use, though.

Thanks for the input guys!

I don't find two hearted disgusting, but it's the definition of "meh".

Disgusting might be a touch of overkill, but (and ive talked about this before) i cannot *stand* centennial used for bittering. Ive had multiple other beers that use centennial earlier in the boil and just cant drink them.

I used to think it was centennial in general that i didnt like in any way. My BU amber showed me that im fine with it very late in the boil, though...which is nice. Just brewed up another amber with a bittering addition of Falconers Flight, and then a 1m addition and a whirlpool with a bunch of centennial. Hoping I like that one as much as my BU amber. (though i changed the malt bill quite a bit)

I'm not too worried about the shipping actually. MoreBeer gets orders here overnight almost every time. I just want to use what I've got on hand before I order something else ;-)

Should have thought about this soon since I just did that MoreBeer order last week. OYE!

Has anyone used hessian pils from TYB yet? Gave me a big apple bomb when I used it, not eager to use it again...
