agreed with ray. I don't get the same utilization out of 5 gals that I do out of 10 gals, though, so since I use 24oz in a huge IPA for 10 gals I recommend at least 12 and possibly 16oz in 5 gals.

Up to you, you know your system better than I do.

I don't think I've gone above ten ounces or so, so this is uncharted territory for me. But the bigger the aroma, the better.

I mean, I have the hops already. If there's no real negative, why not use 'em?

:( speaking of pale ales, i just kicked my keg of session pale ale. Dammit. I think i have another one brewed and ready to keg (might need cold crashing, i forget which batch i have in there), but i should make another batch this weekend.

Maybe ill try doing a batch using my hop schedule from my Amber, but with a lower ABV PA.

I ended up going pretty tried and true on the grain bill.

85.7% Golden Promise
7.1% Munich
5.4% Honey malt
1.8% Flaked wheat

14 pounds total grain for a six gallon batch, estimated OG of 1.063. Should end up right around 7% ABV.

Youre going to be wasted off half a pint.

Though i had 3 or 4 of my 7.3% IPAs last night and felt a bit 'blarg' this morning. Eesh. Starting to think my tolerance isnt what it once was...

Nah, 7% is pretty typical for my beers.

Just had one of my Christmas beers. It still needs some time, but hallelujah, it's not flat anymore. Probably won't get good head retention for another couple weeks, though.

Heh, I thought that one was pretty big, at almost 9% ABV. You guys are killing me with all of the 12%+ stuff. I'm gonna die.

Remember, most of what i drink is under 5%...

I may finish a keg of it in a week, but its still under 5%!

I ended up going with one ounce in the boil (.5 mosaic FWH, .5 galaxy @ 10 min), five ounces at flameout for a 20 minute whirlpool (1 mosaic/2 galaxy/2 amarillo), and ten ounces for dry hop (2 mosaic/4 galaxy/4 amarillo).

We'll see how crazy this is.

Are you using pellets or whole? I'm curious to see how much product you end up with at the end due to hop absorption. Always a problem for me (although the beer is so damn good its hard to complain.)

Are you fining? Carboy or keg? My advice is make sure you keep hop particulate out of the keg. It can lead to clogging and lost beer from the posts if it ends up clogging there. I used to have some of these problems.

Six gallons. I figure I'll lose a good gallon to absorption.

Hop pellets. I plan to do my best to keep particulate out of the keg, just as I wold out of the bottling bucket.

FWIW, ive only used gelatin once, and still havent had issues with getting hops in the keg. I do cold crash though, and im pretty careful to keep the siphon up out of the trub.

I plan to do like I usually do - gelatin in the carboy, carefully siphon off the trub.
