I would lean toward yes, but let me get a ruling.

Okay, the ruling is no. Flaked rye is more of an adjunct, not a base malt. You can use it, but ONLY if you have met the other required ingredients.

Continental Division Hops Question:

Are all varieties (German) of Hallertau acceptable? Hate to make three beers with Mittelfruh only to find out you meant JUST HALLERTAU.....

Hallertau
Hallertau Hersbrucker
Hallertau Mittelfruh
Hallertau Tradition
Hallertau Merkur
Hallertau Taurus
Hallertau Blanc

Just don't want any confusion on this one.

I need to add this to the FAQ. We should have been more specific, but we weren't; therefore, all European Hallertau varies are legal.

Very glad of this clarification... mostly because I just brewed a beer for the challenge with Hallertau Mittelfruh.

As a total noob when it comes to six row, is it necessary to alter my mashing process?  In the quick research I did, it has a higher protein content...does that mean I should give a shot to protein rest? I really do feel silly asking this.

You should be fine doing your regular mashing schedule.

Q: Since we're submitting the particulars of our beers, which is atypical of a BJCP competetion, what are the rulings of a beer that's "Out of style" going to be?  Since the judges can't usually look at the exact OG/FG / calculated IBUs of a beer, they must rely on flavor and aroma alone to judge if a beer is in style or not.  Is there going to be some leeway on whether some beer is "technically" in style, or are the limits in the 2016 guidelines going to be hard and fast?

Q2: Sorry if this is said elsewhere, but is acidulated malt allowed in the SMaSH division?  The rules say that brewing salts and acids are allowed, but does acidulated malt fall in that category?

Thanks for the response, super excited about the competition!

A1: the data you submit for your beers will be used by the organizer and site admins only - judges will not have access to it. So if you're 5 points out of style for the gravity, but the beer tasted great to the judges, you won't be docked. The documentation is only provided to ensure that all recipes and processes are legal.

A2: SMaSH beers may include one malt only. While we realize that acid malt is used for pH adjustment, them's the rules. You'll have to use lactic acid or the like.

Good luck!

Awesome, thanks!

I get it with the acid malt. You make one exception and open the floodgates of "what about..."

Will there be an option to change which beer style per division one would wish to enter? I chose quickly as I didn't want to miss out on getting into this competition. If not no worries but would be cool if we could.

You may change within the Division (i.e. brew an American Amber instead of an American Stout) up until September 15th you just have to contact me, as it is a manual update on our end.

If you want to change among Divisions(i.e. brew an Oatmeal Stout instead of an American Stout), you may also freely do so - but ONLY if the new Division still has room.

Right now, the American Division is more than 75% full, while the Commonwealth is just over 50% full. Odds are, American will be the first major Division to fill up, so while you could then move OUT of it, you could not move IN to it.

Make sense?

One, well, two last questions.

You didn't list one of the things I usually put in the kettle but don't think of as an 'ingredient'. You made exclusions for salts/fining agents.

I would guess that this would extend to water treatments such as K-meta and Na-meta? Also, does this extend to yeast nutrient (specifically marked 'Yeast Nutrient')?

Yes, water treatment items of any sort do not count against the ingredient limit. Yeast nutrient is also fine, and does not count against the limit.
